Spring Miracle
Outside my living room window, where one early May I sowed seeds in a flower box that blossomed into orange and yellow marigolds. A Carolina wren chose that a cozy spot to assemble twigs, pine needles and leaves into a lopsided, sideways nest open toward my window. This gift granted me a ringside view of five eggs she soon laid. Not wanting to disrupt her nest or eggs, I stopped watering my marigolds. I watched them wilt into brittle skeletons so mama bird cold flutter to and fro while I peek into her inner sancta, waiting for future hatchlings to hatch. In June, when chicks emerge from their shells, I watch their down become feathers. In July, they fledge, leaving behind a tattered nest in my window box, where I will plant new blooms.
