Fantasy Flora

When my garden wakes up early spring
before migrating birds return,
snow drop sprigs may peek out
from a blanket of late winter snow.

Soon, forsythias show off strands
bursting with yellow blossoms,
before they will compete with 
clusters of enthusiastic daffodils

Purple irises grab center stage 
just as clusters of daffodils fade,
but before splotches of red, white and lavender
azalea bushes hug the winding stone path

Soon rhododendrons will steal the spotlight,
with giant pink, puffy petals, while
daisies and day lilies wait their turn
to make their dramatic entrance.

Hyper-hued hydrangeas,
all pink, purple and blue 
over-emote the rest of summer,
until the final curtain of falling fall leaves.

But is it ungrateful to wonder how much
more bohemian my garden would look
if all these flowers conspired
to bloom, all at once?
